History

Although numerous archaeological sites and historical records clearly speak to the importance of the Celtic and Roman settlements in the area, it was not until the 12th and 13th centuries that the town of Viveiro properly took shape.

Gastronomy

Thanks to Viveiro’s unbeatable geographic location, combining sea, countryside and river, its cuisine boasts a great quantity and variety of excellent quality products.

  • Seafood: Goose barnacles, shrimp, European lobster, Atlantic lobster, spider crab, velvet crab, clams, wedge clams, mussels, cockles, scallops…
  • River Fish: Trout, salmon, sea trout, eel.
  • Sea Fish: Sole, turbot, sea bass, grouper, sea bream, hake, red mullet, conger eel, sardine, horse mackerel, albacore tuna, squid, baby squid, ray…
  • Meats: Beef, pork, lamb, kid goat.

Typical Dishes: In addition to the classic Galician staples (Galician broth, seafood and fish soups, octopus, tripe, savory “empanada” pies, fish stews, and grilled meats and fish), Viveiro’s local cuisine features:

  • Seafood: Razor clams al lambe-lambe (in a local sauce) or with rice.
  • Fish: Line-caught hake a la gallega, cod with vegetables, herrings with chestnuts, small sardines (parrochas) in a clay pot, and especially the famous bonito en rollo (albacore tuna roll).
  • Meats: Pastelones (large savory pies) of chicken or meat, torresmos (fried pork) with boiled potatoes (cachelos), and meat roll.
  • Desserts: Tarta de Viveiro (almond and angel hair pumpkin cake), chulas (sweet fritters), and almendrados (almond macaroons).
  • Liqueurs: Sour cherry liqueur and sweet cherry liqueur.

Beaches

While the extent of Vivero´s coastline is limited to its estuary-stretching from the Vicedo lookout point to the A Roncadoira point at its mouth-its offering is a rich and diverse. It features sandy shores of varying shapes, sizes, and even sand types: From beautifull, expansive beaches to small, secluded coves, all of wich are the pride of the northern Galician Coast.
